Uruguay may not risk Suarez for England game - report

Luis Suarez Uruguay

The striker is recovering from a knee injury, but the result of Uruguay's opener could affect their selection.

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez may not start against England, depending on the result in Uruguay's opening World Cup match against Costa Rica.

If Uruguay come out on top against their opponents tomorrow, they may be inclined to be cautious with Suarez and leave him on the bench for the clash against England, according to the Liverpool Echo, who have cited sources in Uruguay.

This, of course, could be a welcome boost for England without having to worry about a striker that scored 31 goals for Liverpool in the Premier League last season.

Prior to the World Cup, Suarez had an operation on the meniscus in his knee and his national side are wary of rushing back the Premier League's top scorer from last season too early.

It has been said that Suarez let his England team-mates though that he may well be ready for their clash in Sao Paulo on Thursday.

The Uruguay coach, Oscar Tabarez, has been quoted, saying: “We have no set deadlines with Suarez. I don’t know if we’ll have him for the first match, for the second, for the third.

“If it were up to me, Suarez would play tomorrow.”

There has been footage emerging of Suarez doing some training this week, and he seems to be moving around pretty well, though the approach from Uruguay seems to be long term and if they go deeper into the tournament, even if Tabarez is keen to play him.

If they were to get the win against Costa Rica, and England and Italy drew their opening game then it would be the ideal circumstances to rest Suarez with Uruguay having an early advantage in the group. If, however, they fail to beat Costa Rica then he's likely to face England from the start in what is likely to have a lot at stake.

Liverpool fans will be watching Uruguay's clash with Costa Rica with added interest, even without their star striker representing his country in that game. They will want him to return to the club in the best possible shape ahead of next season, and him not playing as much would decrease the likelihood of lasting damage following his injury.

How big a boost would it be for England if Suarez doesn't play?
