2 duels won, 33 accurate passes - Darmian, Arsenal's possible Aurier alternative

Emirates Outside Night

Matteo Darmian could be a good alternative to Serge Aurier for Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

Matteo Darmian was a real thorn in England’s side last night and he could be a good candidate to replace Bacary Sagna at Arsenal should a deal for Toulouse’s Serge Aurier fall through.

Darmian was relatively solid defensively, but he was superb getting forward down the right hand side, which allowed Italy to flood the midfield and prevent England from moving possession around quickly.

The 24-year-old has several characteristics which should catch Arsene Wenger’s attention although the latest reports suggest that the Frenchman is still interested in doing a deal for Aurier.

Arsenal are a side that thrive on having pace in their team when they attack and that’s something Darmian has in spades on the right hand side.

Regularly, he outsprinted Everton left-back Leighton Baines, which exposed England’s defence and allowed the Torino star to get in behind England’s back four. here are improvements to be made, but he should definitely be an option for the Gunners if they are unsuccessful in completing a deal for Aurier.

So what are Arsenal’s chances of signing him?

His contract with Torino doesn’t expire until the summer of 2017 so his current employers aren’t under any pressure to get a deal done quickly or to negotiation with him over a new deal quickly.

Therefore, it would be difficult for Wenger to approach Torino and do a good value for money deal, when the Italian club would more than likely ask for more than he’s worth.

Wenger is someone who has never let the Gunners be pushed around in the transfer market and he’ll be aware of other targets should Torino play hard ball over the cost of a deal.

There’s also the fact that Aurier had a superb game for the Ivory Coast against Japan, with two assists which suggests he does have a better final ball in the opponent’s defensive third than this Italian option.

Aurier is definitely the priority but Darmian isn’t a bad secondary option should something go wrong with Arsenal’s attempts to sign the Ivory Coast star.

How do you want to see Wenger sign at right-back for Arsenal?
