So this is why Manchester United wanted €40m superstar

Colombia Lineup

James Rodriguez was sensational for Colombia against Greece yesterday.

Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for Colombian international James Rodriguez in the past - in particular before he left Porto for AS Monaco in a massive €40 million deal.

Former boss Sir Alex Ferguson was known to be a fan of the player. He even spoke about him publicly back in 2012 - humorously insinuating that the player was simply to expensive:

"As far as James Rodriguez is concerned, I hope it's not true because it costs a fortune to get a player from Porto!"

But yesterday he looked more than worth every penny of that €40 million price-tag.

Colombia, considered one of the dark horses for the World Cup, tore Greece apart in their opening game yesterday, with 'James' the star of the show. He scored in the 3-0 win, and looked superb throughout.

He has shone in Ligue 1 since his move to Monaco - especially since countryman Radamel Falcao picked up his knee injury, which eventually ruled him out of the competition this summer.

Rodriguez played central yesterday, rather than the wing - and he showed why he prefers playing through the middle with his excellent technique and passing ability.

It was a sensational turn from the player - so should Louis van Gaal follow up Sir Alex's past interest in the player.

The way he took control of the game by the scruff of the neck, stroked the ball around with consummate ease and dribbled past players with elegance was a joy to behold. It was a performance from a midfield player that United would certainly crave in their midfield in the future.

In Colombia he has people asking Falcao who? And in England he has people hoping he can be talked away from Monaco. For now he has the task of trying to win Colombia the World Cup, a feat their passionate fans genuinely believe is possible.
