Argentina, Belgium, Switzerland and the USA featured on day 20

We're now at the knock-out stages of the 2014 World Cup and there has already been a bit of drama, with the forwards' roles becoming more and more important as they look to grab the vital goals to give their country hope in the latter stages of the tournament.

Yesterday saw Argentina face Switzerland and Belgium came up against the USA. Both games went to extra time, and one of them was hailed as one of the games of the tournament.

Goals:

Romelu Lukaku Belgium FW 1 1 30

Romelu Lukaku was the only striker to find the net in either of the two games. After having little impact in the group stages, his introduction in extra time was crucial as he came off the bench to score a crucial goal as Belgium edged past the USA 2-1 to book their quarter-final place against Argentina.

On target scoring attempts:

Clint Dempsey USA FW 4 1 120
Romelu Lukaku Belgium FW 4 1 30
Divock Origi Belgium FW 3 1 90
Kevin Mirallas Belgium FW 2 1 60

Both Clint Dempsey and Divock Origi were lively from the start but these starts illustrate the impact that Romelu Lukaku had in extra time as he hit the target as many times as any other forward did, despite the others being on the field for longer spells. Kevin Mirallas also posed a threat for Belgium, whilst the lack of Argentina and Switzerland names in the list demonstrate how tight a game their encounter was.

Total scoring attempts:

Divock Origi Belgium FW 5 1 90
Clint Dempsey USA FW 4 1 120
Gonzalo Higuaín Argentina FW 4 1 120
Romelu Lukaku Belgium FW 4 1 30

Origi was a constant threat during the 90 minutes he was on the field for Belgium, but these statistics again demonstrate just how much of an impact Lukaku made off the bench against a tiring American defence, and how much of a central figure Clint Dempsey is to the American's attacking play. Gonzalo Higuain was perhaps less than clinical for Argentina as they edged passed Switzerland.

Total attempted assists:

Lionel Messi Argentina FW 8 1 120
Kevin Mirallas Belgium FW 3 1 60
Divock Origi Belgium FW 3 1 90

Unsurprisingly in this case, Lionel Messi leads the way. He set up Angel Di Maria's winner for Argentina against Switzerland, and against a stubborn defence, he was always going to be the man who they'd look to to unlock them. For Belgium, it shows that Kevin Mirallas was lively whilst Origi has shown there is more to his game than taking shots at goal as he tried to get other players involved in the attacking play.
