Leeds United target's future unclear after Cagliari rejection

Leeds could be free to follow up on their reported interest in Agim Ibraimi after Cagliari turned down their option to sign the 25-year-old winger permanently.

Slovenian media reported yesterday that Agim Ibraimi is expected to report back to Slovenian champions Maribor in the next few days after Cagliari declined its option to purchase the Macedonian international.

The 25-year-old winger, according to Sardinian newspaper La Nuova Sardegna, was one of the players that Massimo Cellino had potentially earmarked to take with him to Leeds United, despite his permanent contract being with Maribor.

Ibraimi ended up making 25 league appearances for Cagliari last season, netting two goals in the process. Although he suffered from a slow start, he did get more chances later on under caretaker manager Ivo Pulga playing in twelve of Cagliari's last thirteen games. He notably scored and assisted goals in their 3-0 win over Udinese despite only playing 13 minutes of the match.

Agim Ibraimi is now expected to attend the start of Maribor's summer preparations in the coming days. However, it has been reported that it is not a given that Ibraimi will remain at Maribor for the upcoming season and they're likely to either sell him or loan him to another club.

Leeds, if they do follow up on their interest, will be signing a 25-year-old winger with a wealth of international experience and a good record of scoring goals in Slovenia's highest tier and on the international stage.

In his two years at Maribor he scored 21 goals in 73 games, which for a winger is an exceptional record. And at international level, he has scored six goals in 26 appearances, including important goals in the 2014 World Cup qualifying games against Serbia and Croatia.

Leeds may well bag themselves a full-time international with a good goalscoring pedigree at a multitude of levels, even if his stint in Serie A wasn't all that impressive.

Is Ibraimi the type of player you would want to see at Leeds United?
