Why did Chelsea sign Fabregas? Mourinho explains

Fabregas Barcelona

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho underlines Cesc Fabregas’ qualities that made him move for the Spain international.

Chelsea have been very active in the summer transfer window and have done some good business so far.

The Premier League giants sold defender David Luiz to Paris Saint-Germain for a reported £50 million and are said to be very close to signing striker Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid for £32m.

The Blues have also agreed to recruit former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona for a reported £27m. After Gunners manager Arsene Wenger rejected the chance to use the first-refusal clause, Chelsea swooped in and signed the Spain international.

It may have come as a surprise to many football observers that Mourinho sanctioned the move for Fabregas. After all, there is not exactly a dearth of attacking midfielders in his squad - he also let Juan Mata leave for Manchester United in January - even though one cannot undermine the quality that Fabregas possesses.

Mourinho has now underlined the reasons why he signed the European and world champion.

‘He is the kind of player we need, not just for his qualities as a player but also his competitive personality’, The Express quotes the 51-year-old as saying. ‘He is a player in the best years of his career – 26, 27, 28.

‘He knows England well, he knows the Premiership well, so he will not need time to adapt. I think he is the kind of player who will come and train for a couple of weeks and be ready to prove himself’.

It is interesting to note that Mourinho wants Fabregas to ‘prove himself’. The 27-year-old has won everything he could have won in his career except the Premier League and the Champions League, and that is what the Portuguese boss is after next season.

In his three years back at Barcelona, Fabregas clinched La Liga and the Copa del Rey, but he did not exactly star for them. Last season, the former Arsenal favourite was actually jeered by the Barca supporters, and it is clear that the Blaugrana fans are not exactly sad to see him leave.

Fabregas knows the Premier League inside out and will arrive at Chelsea with renewed hunger and ambition. And that is exactly what Mourinho wants from his players.
