Daniel Sturridge says that he has enjoyed playing for England at the World Cup in Brazil, but is disappointed to be heading back home early.

The England players failed at the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil, and failed miserably, but not because of lack of trying.

Against Italy in their opening Group D game at the Arena da Amazonia in Manaus, the Three Lions’ performance was encouraging despite the defeat.

In their next match against Uruguay, their display was worse, but the contest would probably have ended in a draw had Luis Suarez not been given the ball away so cheaply five minutes from full time.

Two defeats in a row knocked England out of the World Cup, and all they have to play for today is pride.

Costa Rica, supposedly the whipping boys in the group, have already booked their place in the round of 16, thanks to shock triumphs over Uruguay and Italy, and they will be keen to take the scalp of the 1966 World Cup winners as well.

Since England’s humiliating exit from the World Cup, Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has been expressing how miserable he feels on social media.

On the eve of their final match against Costa Rica, the 24-year-old took to social networking site Twitter to express his disappointment, and stated his determination to play in another World Cup.

Sturridge headed into the World Cup in Brazil in great form, having scored 21 goals and provided seven assists in 29 Premier League appearances.

The former Chelsea and Manchester City striker scored against Italy, but failed to find the net against Uruguay.

On Tuesday, Sturridge will be aiming to restore some pride to the England team and help them bow out of the World Cup with a win.
