Five alternative left-backs for United as Shaw price hits £40m

Luke Shaw

Manchester United could be put off by potentially having to pay £40 million to sign Luke Shaw from Southampton.

Southampton are playing hard ball with Manchester United over teenage left-back Luke Shaw, which could see the Old Trafford side pay a staggering price to push through a deal for the defender.

Reports this morning suggest the Saints are holding out for £40 million, which they are well within their rights to do and it’s a price which could cause United to have a re-think over who to bring in on the left side of defence ahead of next season.

There are plenty of options available to the club at left-back, who would all cost substantially less than it would take to make a United player and here are five options.

Alberto Moreno (Sevilla)

Moreno has been strongly linked with a switch to Liverpool, with an £18 million price doing the rounds in reports.

That still makes him a very expensive defender, but it’s substantially less than it would cost United to sign Shaw and provides them with some bargaining room if a bidding war against Liverpool breaks out.

Filipe Luis (Atletico Madrid)

Luis has been most strongly linked with Chelsea and is valued at around the £20 million mark.

What he doesn’t offer, which Shaw would, is longevity because at 28-years-old he’s approach the final chunk of his career, which suggests if United went over Chelsea’s heads they’d face the same value for money criticism they would if they went for Shaw.

Daley Blind (Ajax)

Blind is one of the most versatile defensive players in the Netherlands World Cup squad.

He’s well suited to playing at left-back though Louis van Gaal has been using him further forward in a holding midfield role. At £12 million he’s a cheaper option and someone who could be United’s left-back for several years at just 24-years-old.

Bruno Martins Indi (Feyenoord)

Porto appear to be the front runners to sign Martins Indi from Feyenoord though his price could encourage United to get stuck in.

Porto are reportedly putting roughly £6.5 million on the table for the defender, which will allow United to bid big and still have change left over for other deals. He’s another Dutchman who has already featured at the World Cup under LvG.

Ricardo Rodriguez (Wolfsburg)

A great option in terms of longevity at just 21-years-old and another player Liverpool have been strongly linked with.

His price could reach as high as €25 million according to his agent but that still makes him substantially less expensive than a move to sign Shaw from the Saints. United are well placed to hijack a deal if Liverpool make an offer in that region.
