Algeria crowd with flare

Algeria only needed a draw to finish runners up in Group H, and they grabbed just that in a 1-1 draw with Russia that dumped Fabio Capello's men out of the competition.

With runners up spot still up for grabs both of these teams knew the task at hand, Algeria knew that a draw would likely see them through whilst Russia had to win no matter what.

Fabio Capello’s side couldn't have got off to a better start, after only six minutes Dmitri Kombarov sent a wonderful cross into the box and it was met by ‘wonderkid’ Aleksandr Kokorin. Known as Russia’s version of Justin Bieber, he hadn’t quite delivered the goods so far this World Cup, but all the Russian fans would forgive him if that goal put them into the last 16.

After the goal Algeria began to pile on the pressure and play some really good football, the kind of stuff they showed against South Korea in their 4-2 win. They had some good chances and went close through Yacine Brahimi.

At half-time the two teams knew what they needed to do, for Russia it was to not concede and for Algeria it was to take the game to Russia and get that early goal.

Algeria picked up where they left off and kept on with the pressure, it took 14 minutes after the interval but Algeria finally got their goal. Islam Slimani rose to meet Brahimi’s corner and head it in. It was quite a gift as Russian goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev rushed off his line and missed it. That’s his second mistake at this World Cup, the first coming against South Korea.

Russia tried their best to get back into the game and Aleksandr Kerzhakov had a decent strike on goal which brought a good save from Adi Mbolhi.

Algeria managed to cling on until full-time and were rewarded with a last 16 spot which brought with it emotional scenes. Russia have now been knocked out of the group stage three World Cup's in a row.
