Belgium player ratings v USA: Chelsea man makes huge impact

Romelu Lukaku and Jan Vertonghen Belgium

Romelu Lukaku come off the bench to score one and assist one as Belgium knocked out USA in a thriller at Salvador.

Despite the match ending goalless after 90 minutes, the last second round match between Belgium and USA ended in exciting circumstances.

Romelu Lukaku made a strong run before assisting former Chelsea midfielder Kevin De Bruyne to score from close range. Then De Bruyne returned the favour just before half time in extra time, when Lukaku beat former Everton teammate Tim Howard to double Belgium's advantage.

However USA were superb all night and pulled one back with 14 minutes left through a volley from Julian Green, but it wasn't enough as the Americans were knocked out of the World Cup after a great tournament that was followed vividly by those back home.

Here are the player ratings for Belgium:

Thibaut Courtois - 8

Chelsea goalkeeper made a vital stop from Clint Dempsey in the dying moments of extra-time, a world-class save from a world class keeper.

Toby Alderweireld - 7

Looked strong at right back and was efficient whenever he had the ball, didn't make much of an impact going forward though when he had opportunities.

Vincent Kompany (c) - 8

Superb leadership from the Manchester City captain, didn't look tired as the match wore on. Nearly scored in the last minute of normal time after a great run. Brilliant and solid in defence as always.

Daniel Van Buyten - 7

Did everything that was required of him, especially clearing crosses that come in. Didn't make the same impact as Kompany going forward though.

Jan Vertonghen - 7

Was left isolated so often on the left side when defending, but did well considering he was defending two players on his own for so long.

Alex Witsel - 7

Looked to get himself around the pitch well, making some good tackles and protecting his defence. Looked very tired though as the match wore on.

Kevin De Bruyne - 8

Great energy throughout the 120 minutes from the former Chelsea midfielder. Took his goal well and set-up Lukaku's goal with a lovely pass.

Marouanne Fellaini - 6

Didn't look comfortable playing in the central midfield role. Was as dangerous as always in the air, but struggled playing in a position that required a lot of running, an attribute he isn't too good at.

Eden Hazard - 7

Didn't help too much in defending, however looked dangerous for most of the match. Not as good as he can be though and will need to improve against Argentina in the quarter-finals.

Dries Mertens - 7

Was subbed off after 60 minutes, had a lot of opportunities to deliver dangerous crosses but struggled with set-piece deliveries as well as final ball. Napoli man will need to improve that as the Red Devils progress.

Divock Origi - 7

Started a match for the first time in the World Cup, his pace caused the USA defence throughout and was often the catalyst for the counter attacks. Missed a few good chances though, as well as hitting the bar with a good header.

Subs:

Kevin Mirallas - 7

The Everton winger come on for Mertens after an hour and looked dangerous. Went on plenty of successful dribbles that created chances, may start in the quarter final.

Romelu Lukaku - 8

The Chelsea striker was brilliant in the thirty minutes of extra-time. Quick and powerful, scoring and assisting, he certainly has arrived in the World Cup. He will need to play like that from the start though if Belgium are to go all the way.

Nacer Chadli - N/A

Come on for Eden Hazard after 111 minutes, didn't do much as only come on to use his fresh legs to defend.
