David Luiz

A sensational David Luiz free-kick ensured Brazil beat Colombia 2-1 in Fortaleza to set-up a World Cup semi-final with Germany on Tuesday.

It was a frantic start to the match between two South American countries, and it was Brazil who took the lead early.

Captain Thiago Silva used his knee to divert the ball into the goal at the back post of a Neymar inswinging corner to send the hosts into ecstasy after just seven minutes.

The half continued to be played at a high tempo, and it was Brazil who looked most likely to score again. A powerful left foot strike from Hulk was saved by Ospina, as Colombia struggled to find space in the first half.

The second half was played at a similar tempo, but fewer chances for either team.

Colombia thought they equalised on 66 minutes when Mario Yapas bundled the ball home, only to be adjudged offside.

Their frustrations grew just three minutes later when James Rodriguez fouled Hulk 35 yards out, a decision that Colombia felt was unjust. Only for David Luiz to then punish them with a sensational goal into the top corner that looked that gave Ospina no chance.

Colombia though weren’t giving up; talisman James Rodriguez played a through ball to substitute Carlos Bacca who was clearly fouled by goalkeeper Julio Cesar. The QPR man was booked, but Rodriguez punished him greater by scoring his penalty and reducing the deficit to just one goal with 10 minutes remaining.

Despite Colombia giving it all, they couldn’t find an equaliser and Brazil’s hopes of winning the World Cup in their own country remain a reality.
