Tottenham Hotspur star named among World Cup’s best so far

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has been named among the best 10 players at the World Cup so far.

Following each round, FIFA accumulates player points and rankings from every game to determine who the best players of the tournament to date are.

So far, the Premier League has just one player who sneaks in at 10th spot and that is Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen.

Other than the opening 25 minutes against Algeria where he sloppily conceded a penalty, the Spurs star was a key player for Belgium during their run to the quarter-finals and was tasked with supplying and creating space for Chelsea winger Eden Hazard.

As it turned out, Vertonghen at times looked the bigger threat going forward and his defensive displays on the whole proved to be pretty solid.

According to Opta Stats, in 449 World Cup minutes, the 27-year-old made a total of seven tackles, 22 effective clearances, 12 interceptions and 12 ball recoveries.

Going forward, the former Ajax star certainly did his job in helping out his nation’s strikers, as he completed 141 forward passes and helped create six goalscoring opportunities.

Now that Belgium’s World Cup campaign is over, by FIFA recommendations Vertonghen is expected to take a short break before joining up with Tottenham for pre-season.

New Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino is yet to make his first signing, and his biggest challenge this summer could be keeping hold of those being linked with a White Hart Lane exit.
