The 25-year-old Germany winger missed out on a place at the World Cup through injury and is expected to remain at Borussia Dortmund this summer, scuppering Manchester United’s hopes of signing him but now the Red Devils could be edging closer to signing long-term target Angel Di Maria.
The 26-year-old Argentine four goals and made 17 assists for European champions Real Madrid in La Liga last term whilst Marco Reus managed a tally of 16 goals and 13 assists last term with Dortmund.
The German clearly poses the greater threat in and around the box but Di Maria’s contribution to creative play with the Los Blancos has made him a much-coveted star on the world stage.
Di Maria averaged fewer shots per game on average to his German counterpart, 1.9 per game to Reus’ far superior 3.7 on average, completed more dribbles, 2.7 per game to Di Maria’s 1.4, and earned his side more free kicks by drawing 1.9 fouls per game to Di Maria’s 0.9 on average.
However, Reus was dispossessed more often, 2.1 times per game, more than double the 0.8 times Di Maria was last term and the Argentine was the more efficient in possession, achieving an 82.1% pass completion rate to Reus’ 74.5% for Dortmund.
Although Reus takes more shots and scores more goals than Di Maria, the pair have an equal rate of shots on target with 59% of their total shots hitting the target.
Di Maria at the World Cup with Argentina this summer has actually improved on this, achieving a massive 75% of his shots hitting the target.
Overall, the younger of the two, Reus will likely develop to become the better player, evidenced by his threat in and around the box in terms of his goals and assists as well as his ambition to attempt shots more than Di Maria has in the Spanish capital.
However, where Di Maria is the more successful is in his creative passing play and his superior efficiency with his passing and shooting, making him the less wasteful of the two potential Manchester United targets.
Which of the two would you rather sign for United, Di Maria or Reus?
