Brazil were subject to another convincing defeat, this time at the hands of Netherlands who won 3-0 to claim third place in the World Cup.

Both these teams were playing for pride coming into this game, especially Brazil. Their 7-1 defeat at the hands of Germany rocked not only the team, but the country and they had no choice but to try and fight back. Netherlands were a little more unlucky going out on penalties to Argentina. They were also dealt a blow before kick off when midfielder Wesley Sneijder pulled up with a hamstring injury during the warm up. Jonathan De Guzman came in to replace him.

Netherlands got off to a flying start when Arjen Robben was brought down inside the box by Paris Saint Germain defender, Thiago Silva. There was some controversy around the decision, not the penalty that was clear cut, but the decision to give Thiago Silva only a yellow card. Silva was by far the last man and despite Robin van Persie converting the penalty, Netherlands would have felt aggrieved that Brazil were not down to ten men.

Only 13 minutes later Netherlands doubled their lead. David Luiz who has gone from being FIFA’s player of the tournament to the publics worst, is largely responsible. Clearing the ball from the line, instead of heading it out wide or possibly behind for a corner, Luiz heads it straight down the middle to Daley Blind. The Dutchman takes a touch before smashing a volley in the roof of the net for his first international goal.

For the rest of the half Brazil tried to force their way back into the match, but couldn’t capitalise on any of the set pieces they had.

After the interval Brazil kept pressing and went close through Ramires who broke through the defence but could only pull his shot wide. Oscar also broke through and was brought down by Daley Blind, but was subsequently booked for simulation. There was definite impact and Netherlands will feel lucky with the decision they got. Blind however went off injured due to the impact of the challenge.

The rest of the game petered out in what was a fairly tepid remainder of the game. This was until in the 91st minute, substitute Daryl Janmaat provided a low cross into the six yard box where Georginio Wijnaldum hit a low finish.

Brazil are down and out in the worst possible fashion and the players received a stadium full of jeers. They have conceded 13 goals this World Cup campaign, more than any before. Netherlands however bow out in style and much further than they expected, Manchester United fans meanwhile look forward to Louis van Gaal’s arrival.
