Carragher sure Liverpool will look to sign 'top-class' striker

Jamie Carragher Signing

Jamie Carragher has said that Liverpool will find it difficult to replace Luis Suarez but is confident the club will sign a forward.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher is sure his old club will look to sign a top-class striker in order to attempt to fill the void left by Luis Suarez.

It was announced last week that Suarez will leave Liverpool for Barcelona in a deal worth £75 million. The Uruguayan scored 31 goals for the Reds as they fell just short in the Premier League title race, and Carragher told TalkSport that manager Brendan Rodgers has a difficult job replacing Suarez.

He said: “Liverpool are spending the money in a different way by strengthening the squad in lots of different positions, but they’ve almost had to do that because you’re not going to get anyone better than Suarez.

“I’m sure Brendan will be looking to sign a top class forward now, but we’re talking about replacing one of the best players in world football.

“Maybe only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been above him over the last few years, so chances of finding someone better are very slim.

“But with Champions League football returning this season, Liverpool need a bigger squad and more quality and it seems like they’re addressing that at the moment."

When any talisman leaves the club it is going to be very difficult for them to be replaced. Liverpool are back in the Champions League this year which is an important factor to consider when it comes to their transfer dealings this summer - compared to when Tottenham sold Gareth Bale last summer, they couldn't attract the kind of quality required.

The Reds surprised many fans last season with their second place finish in the Premier League, and they will be hoping to prove people wrong again as they begin life after Suarez.

It has been a busy transfer window for the Reds so far as they look to build a side capable of competing on four fronts as well as compensating for the loss of their star player.

Carragher added: "It will be an interesting season, no one predicted that Liverpool would have such as good campaign last term, so if the side can reproduce that again this season, without Suarez as well as coping with Champions League football, it will be an even bigger achievement.”

Competition looks fierce to get into the Champions League places this season. Some think Liverpool will struggle to get into the top four - but if they can somehow mount another serious title challenge, the long-term outlook for Liverpool will look pretty bright.
