Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo insists he is happy at the Etihad and wants to stay amidst interest from Atletico Madrid.

28-year-old Spaniard Alvaro Negredo only signed for Manchester City 12 months ago from Sevilla but the striker is now being targeted reportedly as a replacement for Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa who has now completed his move to join Chelsea.

Negredo enjoyed a good debut season in the Premier League last term, scoring 23 goals in 43 appearances across all competitions for the Citizens, although his form dipped in the latter half of the season.

Negredo scored an impressive 31 goals in 42 appearances for Sevilla in his final season with the La Liga outfit in 2012/13 where he was one of club’s key players and something of a talismanic figure up front.

Despite a decent return for the Manchester giants last term, Alvaro Negredo was left out of the Spain squad by Vincente del Bosque for this summer’s World Cup in Brazil. But given the holders’ early exit and poor performance at the tournament, the striker may now feel his exclusion was proved wrong along with his teammate at City and formerly Sevilla Jesus Navas and midfielder Javi Garcia who were also left out by the Spain boss.

“I don’t want to leave City, I’m very happy and settled here. I had a difficult end to the season and that’s why there’s been a lot of talking. But I’ve been very happy from the first day I arrived,” stated Negredo.

Some in his native Spain had suggested before the World Cup that his move to City, along with Navas, had been directly related to their being left out in the cold by the national team coach.

Neither Negredo nor Navas achieved the same access to first team football at the Etihad as they had at Sevilla but they did achieve Premier League winners’ medals for their contributions and it seems Alvaro Negredo is prepared to fight for his place yet again in the coming campaign.
