Alexis Sanchez signed for Arsenal this month in a reported £35 million deal from Barcelona. The 25-year-old Chile international forward had the choice of elite European clubs but opted to join the Gunners.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed what he believes to be the reason the forward chose the Emirates Stadium instead of Anfield, insisting that Sanchez preferred a move to the English capital, London.
"Lots of players are really impressed by what we are doing as club and really excited about coming to Liverpool," he told The Daily Mail.
"It was not lack of ambition from the club (that Sanchez went to Arsenal). The player and his family want to choose to live wherever that is.”
The Northern Irishman has been honest about the club’s failure to sign the Chilean - other managers may have denied that they were interested in the player or suggested that it was in order that the club could spend money on another target.
Rodgers’s transparency on the issue is admirable, given that Arsenal are a direct Premier League rival who have signed a world-class player over the Merseyside giants.
With Liverpool finishing above Arsenal in the Premier League last season, one would be inclined to think that Rodgers is right in his assertion that the player wanted to move to London because of the city. There will be other players who would likely have chosen the opposite.
Ultimately, Arsenal fans will not care much why Sanchez chose to join the North London outfit, but it cannot be denied that the former Udinese star would have been a very good signing for Liverpool, especially with Luis Suarez leaving for Barcelona.
Do you think Sanchez made the right choice?
