Top 5 iPhone 5/5s cases

The IPhone 5

This is our selection of the top 5 cases you buy for the iPhone 5 or iPhone 5s.

5) Mophie Juice Pack Plus

Do you always get frustrated by your iPhone 5 or 5s' poor battery life? If so, then the number five in our list could be the perfect case for you.

The Mophie Juice Pack Plus is an all round protective case that will give your iPhone up to 120% more battery life!

But for this extra usage time you have to sacrifice thickness. The Juice Pack Plus will more than double the thickness of your iPhone 5 or 5s, so if you're the type of person that likes slim cases, or wear tight jeans, this might not be for you.

The JPP has a curved rubbery rear and shinier band around the sides to give the device that extra bit of grip. The case has plastic buttons where you would expect to see the volume, mute and sleep/wake buttons, and if you use standard headphones you will be required to use the headphone jack extension that is included with the case.

The case's built-n battery has indicator LEDs, an indicator button and a standby switch for activating the flow of power to your iPhone. It comes in red, black or white.

4) Otterbox Defender

The Otterbox Defender is a case you probably need if you are on the clumsy side, or work in an environment where fragile things like an iPhone can be easily damaged or broken.

Arguably the most protective case on the market the Defender, like the Juice Pack, will pretty much double the thickness of the device itself.

The case is made up of three parts: two polycarbonate inner parts that snap together to cover the entirety of the iPhone, and this includes a built-in screen protector, and the outer layer is a silicone band that moulds around the sides and back of the iPhone.

The big plus of this case is that it's one of the only rugged cases you will be able to buy that will enable you to use the iPhone 5s Touch ID fingerprint scanner. This is the big difference between the 5s and 5 case, the 5 will have a cover for the home button whereas the 5s version will not.

Ports like the Lightning port, headphone port and mute switch are covered with silicone flaps. They are quite easy to open, but not all headphone connectors will not fit into the small opening.

3) Magpul Field Case

The Magpul Field Case is a really nice case made in America by gun accessory manufacturer Magpul. It's made from a thermoplastic that moulds tightly around your iPhone 5 or 5s.

It's made in 13 different colours so you're bound to find a colour to suit your own preference. It doesn't add too much bulk to the device, and it is ribbed around the sides and back that made it comfortable to hold in your hand without the fear of potentially dropping it.

There is a cutout for the mute switch that you may find difficult to access if you have large finger, but the case's volume rocker is nicely designed and the button for the sleep/wake button works as well as you would expect.

It includes a lip that is slightly higher than the screen so theoretically the iPhone's glass display should never touch a flat surface.

The Field Case has very close cutouts for the headphone jack and lightening port so provided you are not using oversized accessories you shouldn't run into too many issues.

2) Apple iPhone 5s Case

The case that Apple released with the introduction of the iPhone 5s is arguably the most well fitted case that you can buy for an Apple device. And rightly so, it is made by Apple after all!

It's compatible with both the 5 and 5s and is crafted out of high quality leather. The Apple case will preserve the look and thinness of your iPhone without looking out of place.

Apple has really gone into detail with this case having made 24 tiny cutouts for each of one of the small speakers holes on the iPhone 5 or 5s. There are also precise cutouts for the lightening and headphone ports, as well as the mute switch.

The volume, sleep/wake buttons and Apple logo are pressed into the leather material and they both give good tactile feedback. However some users have reported stiffness in pressing the sleep/wake button, which is probably expected in new leather.

It will ship in six colours: black, brown, grey, red, yellow and blue. Beware though; as it is leather, any colour other than black will show signs of wear with prolonged use. So if you do not like the look of worn coloured leather, you should probably steer clear of this one.

1) Power Support Flat Bumper

This case might not be the most protective, but it is the best looking and most unique case on this list, and for that reason it takes the number one spot.

Made by Japanese company Power Support, the flat bumper is, as you would expect a bumper that covers the sides of the iPhone 5 and 5s.

The company obviously realise the Flat Bumper doesn't offer exceptional protection so inside the packaging they include two Power Support screen protectors, a matte anti-glare and a crystal clear version in addition to one crystal clear back protection film.

Power Support's Flat Bumper is arguably the most minimalist and stylish case you will see on a smartphone. The bumper itself has a smooth and sleek finish, with thin rubber buffers on either side to aid grip and prevent the screen or rear touching any flat surfaces.

Like the Apple case, the Power Support has also gone that extra mile with detail and made the 24 tiny cutouts for each individual speaker hole, with also precise holes for the headphone jack and lightening connector.

One of the most eye-catching and unique features of this case is the buttons. They are designed in such a way you could be easily forgiven for thinking that they are touch sensitive buttons. The buttons are completely flat and do not deter from the design of the bumper, and can only be identified by the thin grooved lines that outline where they should be on the device.

The case can be purchased in 11 different colours.
