Saints links show that Liverpool deal should only be a matter of time

Dejan Lovren

Ronaldo Koeman seems to be very much in the market for a central defender, ahead of another departure from St Mary's.

Recent reports from Southampton have shown that Ronald Koeman is very much in the market for a top defensive addition.

This would normally be little more than squad improvements for most Premier League sides, but given as the club's top defensive star Dejan Lovren is inching towards linking up with former teammates Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana on Merseyside, it seems there is an already active replacement process in place to ensure Southampton are not caught short come the start of the season.

Ronald Koeman earlier in the week commented on his interest in bringing Dutch World Cup star Ron Vlaar to St Mary's from Aston Villa. The former Barcelona defender worked with Vlaar at Feyenoord a couple of years ago, and was quoted as telling Fox Sports: "Ron would definitely be an option. But I think he won't be cheap right now. Let's just wait and see."

On top of this comes the news that Southampton are attempting to hijack QPR's move for Cardiff and England centre back Steven Caulker.

All of this is a huge indication that Lovren, a player closely linked to a departure from the Saints last month is on the cusp of managing to push through his move to Liverpool.

The Croatian defender's statements earlier last month about his head already being at Anfield have certainly been impossible to dispel, and amid reports that a transfer fee between the two clubs being as good as agreed, it looks only a matter of time before the transfer is finalised.

Would Lovren be a good signing for Liverpool? Who should Southampton sign if the Croatian departs?
