Chelsea are high on the potential of Patrick Bamford.

Chelsea are keen to explore Patrick Bamford's potential as they progress with their pre-season plans.

The young striker scored 25 goals last season in the Football League, on loans with MK Dons and later Derby County.

The Blues were so thrilled with his progress in League One that in January they fast-tracked him to Championship side Derby, where he also shone.

Now the club want to see whether he is ready to make another step up, and Champions League football is under consideration.

Steve Holland, assistant coach, told Chelsea's website: "What we will be looking at in the next few weeks is whether he can adapt other areas of his game and how he combines with top-level midfielders to see if he can make the step not just into the Premier League but into a Champions League team as well."

Bamford, 20, is already off the mark in pre-season, scoring in the club's 5-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers.

Holland's comments are slightly ambiguous in terms of where Bamford's future will lie however, even if he gets the seal of approval.

Chelsea's striker situation is in flux at the moment, with Costa signed, Ba sold, and conflicting reports circling regarding Torres, Lukaku and Drogba.

Bamford can force his name into the mix, but also may earn himself a loan move, either to a Premier League side, or to a club abroad which can offer Champions League football.

Where should Bamford play his football next season?
