MLS team of the week: Robbie Keane the star of week 19

USA Flag 2

Former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur striker Robbie Keane was in fine goal-scoring form for the LA Galaxy.

GK – Steve Clark (Columbus Crew)

A big reason for the Crew’s 2-1 win over the Montreal Impact on the weekend was the performance of Clark in goal, as the keeper came up with five decisive saves to keep his side in the game.

RB – Zach Loyd (FC Dallas)

Saturday’s 2-0 win over the New England Revolution was Loyd’s best performance of the season, as he dominated the right flank over the course of the 90 minutes, both in attack and defence, showing the form which once made him a US national team hopeful.

CB – Ethan White (Philadelphia Union)

Brought back into the lineup under interim head coach Jim Curtin, White helped hold the potent Red Bulls attack to just the one goal in Wednesday’s 3-1 win, before stifling reigning MLS MVP Mike Magee in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with the Chicago Fire.

CB – Liam Ridgewell (Portland Timbers)

Making his MLS debut, the former West Bromwich Albion defender stepped in to solidify the Timbers’ backline as they secured a much-needed 2-1 win against an in-form Colorado Rapids side.

LB – Moises Hernandez (FC Dallas)

Much like Loyd on the right, Hernandez enjoyed a very productive outing against the Revolution, storming down the left flank throughout the game, while also keeping the opposition attack quiet.

CM – Perry Kitchen (D.C. United)

Kitchen has quietly been one of the league’s top midfielders in 2014 and showed why in the 3-1 win over Chivas USA with another dominant performance in the middle of pitch, even grabbing his third goal of the season in the process.

CM – Benny Feilhaber (Sporting Kansas City)

The standout performer of week 19 along with Keane, Feilhaber was the driving force behind KC taking maximum points from their two games, grabbing a goal and assist in the 2-1 win over the Crew, before scoring a fantastic free-kick as they defeated LA by the same scoreline on the weekend.

RW – Gyasi Zardes (LA Galaxy)

After a slow start to what was tipped to be his breakout season, Zardes has stepped up over recent weeks to demonstrate his obvious potential, the two goals in 5-1 thumping of the New England Revolution in midweek a sure sign of things to come.

AM – Diego Valeri (Portland Timbers)

The Timbers went a goal down early on in Friday’s clash against the Rapids but it was Valeri who was able to inspire the comeback, the Argentine scoring the game-winner in the 77th minute to give the side their first home win in over two months.

LW – Bernardo Anor (Columbus Crew)

Anor has developed a reputation for coming up with fantastic goals had he grabbed two of them against the Impact as the Crew held on for their first win in eight games.

ST – Robbie Keane (LA Galaxy)

Keane was the MVP candidate most had tipped him to be in preseason during the 5-1 midweek win over the Revolution, bagging a brace and two assists, before scoring again on the weekend in the narrow 2-1 defeat to Sporting KC.
