Having faced similar expectations upon moving from Manchester United to Real Madrid for €94million in 2009, Cristiano Ronaldo has some advice for new €80million signing James Rodriguez.

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has offered some advice to his new teammate James Rodriguez, following the Colombian’s €80million move from Monaco.

Having signed a six-year deal with club, on the back of his impressive displays at the World Cup, Rodriguez follows in the footsteps of some of the game’s biggest names in moving to the La Liga giants, and Ronaldo has stressed how committed he now must be in order to prove a success in the Spanish capital.

‘Playing at Real Madrid, we always have pressure because it’s the most important club in the world,’ he told Sky Sports.

‘There’s always attention, so I need to pressure myself to be the best all the time, train hard all the time and dedicate myself 100%. I want a good career until I retire so that’s what I do, and he will now have to do that too.’

Beginning his professional career with Colombian side Envigado, before moving down to Argentinian club Banfield aged 17, Rodriguez arrived in Europe with Porto in 2010, where he would go on to win three league titles and the 2011 Europa League during his three seasons in Portugal.

Eventually moving to big-spenders Monaco last summer for €45million, the 23-year-old finished his debut campaign with a Ligue 1-leading 12 assists to help the side to a second-place finish behind PSG, before his efforts guiding Colombia to the quarter-finals in Brazil saw Real come calling.

Whether the young play-maker can live up to the hefty expectations that comes with playing for one of the game’s giants remains to be seen, but his performances this summer at least suggest that he is not one to wilt when on the big stage.
