Stats: Steven Gerrard performances after internationals - will Liverpool benefit?

Steven Gerrard England

After announcing his retirement from England, the Reds captain could be fresh for big Premier League games, and a trip to Arsenal stands out.

Steven Gerrard announced his retirement from international football yesterday after an England career which covered 14 years and 114 caps.

One of the key factors in his decision was the fact that Champions League football has returned to Anfield from next season. As the 34-year-old looks to preserve himself as much as possible for his boyhood club, the fixtures after an international break should be when the Reds talisman should be at his best for the club.

If we have a look at Liverpool's results from the last campaign following international commitments, they were:

Stoke City (H) 1-0

Swansea City (A) 2-2

Newcastle United (A) 2-2

Everton (A) 3-3

Probably a disappointing set of results. Gerrard had an effect in draws against Newcastle and Everton but if you watch those games back, there were times when he looked a little overrun in the middle of the park.

If we have a look at the statistics from last season and compare Gerrard's overall average performances compared to those immediately after international breaks, here are the findings:

  TeamPosGoals / apps(Won Tackle / Total Tackle) * 100((Accurate Pass+Accurate Cross) / (Total Pass+Total Cross)) * 100(Won Contest / (Total Contest+Overrun)) * 100AppsMins
Steven Gerrard Liverpool MF 0.38 72.45 81.87 71.43 34 2,900
  TeamPosGoals / apps(Won Tackle / Total Tackle) * 100((Accurate Pass+Accurate Cross) / (Total Pass+Total Cross)) * 100(Won Contest / (Total Contest+Overrun)) * 100AppsMins
Steven Gerrard Liverpool MF 0.25 63.64 81.07 50.00 4 360

The statistics seem to indicate that in key areas Gerrard will be better for the rest. He won more battles on average than after international breaks, as well as winning a bigger percentage of his tackles. The passing statistics are very similar, whilst some will argue that his goals are a bit of an anomaly given most of his goalscoring came from the penalty spot last season.

However, a record of only one win in four is something the side overall will want to improve on following internationals, but if Gerrard is fresh and at his best then their record could improve, and there is one game in particular that season where Gerrard having a rest could benefit them in April time, where Liverpool travel to the Emirates Stadium to take on Arsenal.

Games he should be 'fresher' for this season:

Aston Villa (H) - September 13

QPR (A) - October 19
