Steven Gerrard announced his decision to retire from international football yesterday after a superb career which saw him secure 114 caps.
There have been various criticism levelled towards Gerrard in an England shirt, with some fans suggesting we never got to see the best of him playing for his country but he can hold his head high after a superb career wearing the three lions.
There are some memorable Gerrard performances in an England shirt such as his goal in that famous 5-1 win away in Germany and his efficient performance against the USA in the 2010 World Cup.
Gerrard can’t be blamed for calling it a day at international level because of the way Liverpool’s season is shaping up.
Gerrard is most likely to feature prominently in the first two, making appearances in the domestic cup competitions towards the later rounds. They’ll be challenged more strongly this season due to nearly securing the Premier League title last time round, with Gerrard leading from the front in important games.
At 34-years-old the combination of more games for Liverpool has to be measured against his age and the likeliness that he needs more recovery time in between games for his club.
Add to that the fact that the Premier League still doesn’t have a winter break and it’s arguable to suggest that Liverpool’s skipper could quickly become fatigued next season.
That means in order to prolong his Liverpool career and his importance to his club, he has to take himself out of the equation for international breaks and give himself extra rest wherever he can.
Here’s what Liverpool fans had to say about his decision to retire and how it benefits them next season.
Gerrard at his best was played out of position to accommodate Frank Lampard - such a waste of the best English player of his generation #LFC— Anfield Talk (@Anfield_Talk) July 21, 2014
Sad to see Steven Gerrard retire from the England national team, but I suppose it benefits @LFC so good and bad.— (Mo) Ily (Shaikh) (@IlyS182) July 21, 2014

Great decision by Gerrard...he could've easily played on and beat the caps record. England's loss is our gain.— Thomas (@Ayemyarse) July 21, 2014
Sad to hear about Steven Gerrard. Surely he could've played 2 more games to overtake David Beckhams record and become 2nd most capped player— Adam Britten (@BrittenAdam) July 21, 2014
More than happy for Steven Gerrard to step down from England, limited number of games left so may as well have them saved for #LFC— Paul Oldfield (@Paul_Oceanic) July 21, 2014
A sad inditement of our national team that players retire from duty, rather than being dropped for performing poorly... #Gerrard— Dan Tiller (@my_nameis_dan) July 21, 2014
How do you think Gerrard's England retirement will benefit Liverpool?
