Were these the two reasons Tiago snubbed a return to Chelsea?

Stamford Bridge Inside

Atletico Madrid midfielder Tiago has signed a new deal with Atletico Madrid, snubbing a return to Chelsea.

Tiago won't be returning to Chelsea after signing a new deal with Atletico Madrid.

The u-turn from the Portuguese midfielder, who became a free agent in June, will come as welcome relief to Diego Simeone who has been forced to see some of his best players head off to Chelsea already this summer.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, there are two main reasons Tiago chose to stay with Atletico and neither are to do with the idea that he may not play a great deal at Stamford Bridge.

“Atletico coach Diego Simeone has been in contact with Tiago and has sought to persuade him to reverse his decision to leave the Vicente Calderón – and sign a new contract with the Colchoneros,” reports AS.

“For family and sporting reasons, Tiago is inclined towards continuing with Atlético.”

There have been valid arguments over Simeone’s ability to man manage players this summer due to the number of players leaving and this will be a big boost to the Argentine that he can still command the respect and loyalty of key players.

The family angle is one that any player has to consider when he’s linked with a move away from a club because others are affected when a decision is made to move to another part of a country or a different country altogether.

It’s not a huge blow to the Blues because they already have plenty of different midfield options covering the area where Tiago would have slotted into Jose Mourinho’s team.

Cesc Fabregas will likely start as Chelsea’s main central midfielder this season behind Oscar who could play further forward.

Ramires is also perfectly capable of playing a central midfield role should Mourinho want to push Fabregas further forward and into the number ten role behind Diego Costa as the main striker.

Tiago would have guaranteed experience, which is lost through Frank Lampard’s departure but missing out on the Portuguese is a blow Chelsea can take.
