What would this 21-year-old Argentine’s arrival mean for Spurs’ current squad?

White Hart Lane

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Manuel Lanzini, but what would his arrival mean for those players already at the club?

Recent reports have claimed Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing River Plate’s attacking midfielder Manuel Lanzini. But if the 21-year-old did arrive, whose place would be most under threat?

The Argentine operates predominantly in an attacking midfield role, which could raise questions over the use of play-maker Christian Eriksen.

The Danish international was one of Tottenham’s stand-out performers last season, but he is considerably more effective operating centrally than out wide, where his influence is somewhat negated.

Of course there could be a system that allows Eriksen to operate behind a lone frontman and Lanzini to burst forward from behind. But if Spurs were to play with two up front, it would be highly unlikely that Lanzini and Eriksen could both be utilised through the middle.

The good thing about the reported Tottenham target is that he can also play on either flank. And with Andros Townsend, Aaron Lennon, Nacer Chadli and Erik Lamela competing for a starting-berth out wide, they could be the players most at risk of missing out were Lanzini to arrive.

Of course it is mere speculation at this point. But the question over who would miss out is worth asking, because if Lamela is rejuvenated – as has been suggested – following a disappointing debut campaign, if Townsend is back fit and firing and if Eriksen is to be used in his best position, Spurs do not seem to need another such player.

Surely they should be looking to strengthen up front and in defence, with the attacking midfielders already at their disposal more than capable of doing well if they play to their potential.

Do you think Lanzini would be an unnecessary signing for Tottenham?
