18-year-old is Arsenal's only striker on New York trip, is Wenger sure he does not need another?

Chuba Akpom

Chuba Akpom is the only recognised striker in Arsenal's squad for their pre-season friendly.

Arsenal named their travelling squad for the trip to New York on Wednesday evening, and there was one area of the squad lighter than the others.

  • Goalkeepers: Damien Martinez, Wojciech Szczesny
  • Defenders: Hector Bellerin, Kieran Gibbs, Isaac Hayden, Carl Jenkinson, Ignasi Miquel, Nacho Monreal
  • Midfielders: Mikel Arteta, Santi Cazorla, Francis Coquelin, Abou Diaby, Mathieu Flamini, Kristoffer Olsson, Aaron Ramsey, Tomas Rosicky, Jon Toral, Jack Wilshere, Gedion Zelalem
  • Forward: Chuba Akpom

18-year-old strike Chuba Akpom was the only named striker, with Yaya Sanogo mysteriously left out.

The reasons are unclear at this stage, with suggestions ranging from injury, plans to loan him, or even forgetting his passport.

Whichever, it underlines the lack of strength in depth the Gunners possess in the position, should anything happen to Olivier Giroud.

Giroud is presently on extended holiday due to the World Cup, and while new signing Alexis Sanchez will offer a real goal threat, he is not a prototypical centre-forward, and may frequently line up out wide, similar to Theo Walcott but from the left.

Walcott himself is absent from the tour with injury still, with Lukas Podolski also on vacation, as is Joel Campbell.

Given the number of players missing, perhaps Akpom being the only striker is not such a big deal, and it presents a great opportunity for him to show what he can do.

Yet with Arsene Wenger commenting at the weekend he would not be bringing in another frontman this summer, perhaps the lop-sided squad may cause him to reconsider - unless the England youth international can show something special in New York.

What do you think of Akpom being the only striker in the squad?
