Ligue 1's Top 50 Premier League targets: 16-20; Two stars ideal for Everton

Ligue 1 50 11-20

Numbers 16-20 of 50 players from Ligue 1 that Premier League teams should be targeting this summer.

Every season the Premier League plunders France for some of its most prominent talent. This year has been no different. Remy Cabella and Emmanuel Rivière have joined Newcastle United, Bafetimbi Gomis made the jump to Swansea and Ligue 1 graduate Mathieu Debuchy upgrade to a place in Arsenal’s starting lineup.

Premier Leagues always look across the channel, and usually they find some excellent value for money. For every £30 million spent on Luke Shaw, you will find £8 million to invest in a player like Serge Aurier.

Over the next five days we will bring you 50 Ligue 1 players that the Premier League should be targeting for the new season. In no particular order, here are numbers 16-20.

Clement Grenier – Lyon

Position: Attacking-Midfield

Suggested Clubs: Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool

Clement Grenier is one of the classiest midfielders in France. Graceful on the ball, when he winds up for a long pass it is almost poetic. He is an absolute joy to watch.

Great vision, a superb eye for a pass and a great sense of unselfishness make Grenier the perfect playmaker. After moving out from under Yoann Gourcuff’s shadow, the France midfielder is slowly making Lyon his team.

It was a huge disappointment that he didn’t make the World Cup due to injury, but it won’t stop his progress this season. He could go on to have a superb season for Lyon, but if a team is looking for a player to guide their team, Grenier would be a superb option.

Issa Cissokho – FC Nantes

Position: Right-Back

Suggested Clubs: West Ham United, Crystal Palace, Stoke City

While his brother Aly was trying to win a permanent move to Liverpool, brother Issa was putting in some superb performances for Nantes last season. His lung-bursting runs down the right from full-back were breath-taking at times.

He added four assists early in the season, and as Nantes faded, so did Cissokho’s chances to impress as an attacking full-back.

He brings power and pace to any defence; his size and strength make him a considerable force both in defence and attack. His style is ready-made for England and would improve most sides outside the top six.

Clement Chantome – Paris Saint-Germain

Position: Centre-Midfield

Suggested Clubs: Everton, Swansea, Sunderland

Sometimes a player just ends up at the wrong club at the wrong time. Clement Chantome has all the ability in his game to be a current French international, the problem he has is trying to come through a Paris Saint-Germain side full of midfield superstars.

With a lovely first touch, great and varied passing ability and the drive and determination to control the midfield. His time in PSG’s reserves has stunted his progression and now is the time for Chantome to spread his wings and fly.

Excellent on loan at Toulouse last season, he wants a permanent move and any mid-table Premier League side would be a wonderful move for all involved.

Lucas Orban – Girondins de Bordeaux

Position: Left-Back

Suggested Clubs: Stoke City, Sunderland, Crystal Palace

Sunderland were once linked with this tough-tackling Argentine defender, and after his season with Bordeaux it is easy to see how. Lucas Orban is that rare breed of full-back, one that prefers defending to marauding forward.

Big and strong enough to play as a centre-back, but reads the game very well on the flanks. He gets forward on occasion, and has a good delivery from his left-foot when he gets the chance.

Physically he would adapt very quickly to the Premier League, but he’d bring a certain flair to many a defence at the same time.

Romain Hamouma – Saint-Etienne

Position: Winger

Suggested Clubs: Leicester City, West Brom, Swansea

This former Caen winger didn’t win enough praise for his performances last season. Helping Saint-Etienne push for third place he scored nine goals and added four assists.

Tricking on the ball, with his direct running style he terrorised Ligue 1 full-backs for the majority of the season. He has a knack for scoring in the big games, but unfortunately his second half of the season wasn’t the strongest, but it makes his numbers that more impressive.

Perhaps a little light-weight for the Premier League but is adapts very well to any challenges.
