League One transfer latest: Barnsley sign ex-Chelsea goalkeeper

Ross Turnbull

All the latest summer transfer news from League One...

Barnsley have seen their squad take a number of hits this summer, but they've gone some way to replacing goalkeeper Luke Steele and striker Chris O'Grady with two deals today. Firstly, former Chelsea goalkeeper Ross Turnbull, who most recently played for Doncaster Rovers, has joined the club on a two-year deal after leaving the Keepmoat Stadium.

And up front, Barnsley have swooped to sign Scunthorpe United striker Sam Winnall on a three-year deal. The 23-year-old, who hit 23 goals for the Iron last season, has been watched by a number of League One sides over the past year, but the Tykes have laned him for a six-figure sum.

Elsewhere, Notts County have already snapped up the likes of Hayden Mullins, Blair Adams, Liam Noble, Nicky Wroe and Zeli Ismail, and Shaun Derry has today continued their recruitment drive with the signing of former Bradford City and Scunthorpe United winger Garry Thompson.

The 33-year-old, who was released by Bradford this summer, joins the Magpies on a one-year-deal as Derry looks to add more experience to his squad ahead of the coming season.

Peterborough United lost out in the playoff semi-finals last season to Leyton Orient, and Darren Ferguson was then dealt another blow with the departure of both of his senior full backs, with Mark Little signing for Bristol City before Craig Alcock moved on to Sheffield United.

Now Ferguson looks set to land a replacement, as Bristol Rovers' Michael Smith edges closer to a move to London Road. The 25-year-old, formerly of Ballymena United, impressed last season despite the Pirates' relegation out of the Football League, and is now on the verge of becoming Peterborough's latest signing.
