Real Madrid coach: Filipe Luis will be better than Ashley Cole

Ashley Cole

The Brazilian comes into the Chelsea squad with big shoes to fill - but one man thinks the Blues have signed Atletico's best player.

With a new man set to feature from the left of the Chelsea defence in the coming season, some Blues fans may be wondering just how good 28-year-old Brazilian Filipe Luis is - or more accurately, is he able to replace legendary departed fullback Ashley Cole.

After joining for £15.8 million last week, much is expected of Luis, but he looks more than capable of being a success at Stamford Bridge.

In all honesty, Luis has already proved his qualities on both the domestic and European stage, helping Atletico to their first La Liga title since the 1990s, and winning the Europa League and finishing runners up in the Champions League during his four years at the club.

Additionally, Jose Mourinho and the Chelsea faithful got used to seeing Cole out of the line up last season, with versatile fullback Cesar Azpilicueta performing superbly down the left flank for much of the season.

But the words of Real Madrid assistant, and former Chelsea coach Paul Clement should serve to dismiss any lingering doubts Blues supporters may have over a player who has been unable to seize a regular spot in Brazil's international squad.

“Atletico had an amazing season last year," said Clement, "but Filipe was their best player.

“We played them five times and I watched them on countless other occasions, and he never seemed to make a mistake. He’s good on the ball, reasonably quick and incredibly tough in the tackle.

“He’s smart and resilient, so should be perfect for the Premier League.

“How he wasn’t playing for Brazil this summer I’ll never know.”

Do you think Luis can be as good as Cole?
