Essien asks for meeting with Inzaghi as Zenit rumours abound

Essien Training

Former Chelsea man Michael Essien wants to meet new AC Milan boss Pippo Inzaghi to discuss his role for the coming season.

Michael Essien is said to be keen to meet with AC Milan coach Pippo Inzaghi to discuss plans for the 2014-15 campaign.

Essien left Chelsea for Milan in January and signed a one-and-a-half year deal at San Siro after nine years at Stamford Bridge.

The midfielder struggled to make his mark in Serie A in a Milan side that underachieved badly, not even qualifying for Europe.

But Russian side Zenit Saint Petersburg are said to be determined to sign Essien and could suggest a swap deal including Domenico Criscito.

Italian defender Criscito has been a target for Milan but is currently valued at around £10 million, which would probably be beyond the Italian club.

Ghanian international Essien seems to be looking to clarify his future under new boss Inzaghi, who has just replaced Clarence Seedorf, before he makes any decisions on his future.

"I spoke with Essien's agent yesterday," FIFA agent Fabrizio Ferrari said on SportItalia.

"The player wanted to talk to Inzaghi. Milan's pre-season preparations are starting and the situation with the new coach will evolve. Essien wants to see what his position at the new Milan is.

"He arrived at the club on the wane but he has international experience and if he is physically fit he can give a lot."

Can Michael Essien still contribute at the highest level?
