General Motors has announced another six safety recalls covering another 717,950 recent model vehicles in the US and pushing its worldwide total of recalls for this year past a record breaking 40 million.
The bulk of the new recalls announced Wednesday, 414,333 vehicles, relate to recently sold Chevrolet Camaro and Equinox, GMC Terrain, Buick Regal and LaCrosse and Cadillac SRX models in the US. The vehicles are equipped with powered adjustable driver or front passenger seat structures that have faulty bolts.
The company said the bolt that secures the height adjuster actuator may become loose or fall out. “If the bolt falls out, the seat will move up and down freely because it is no longer attached at the height adjuster. The vehicles are safe to drive, but customers should not use the power height adjustable feature until dealers can replace the height adjuster bolt. GM is aware of one crash and three injuries but no fatalities related to this condition,” the company said in a statement.
“These recalls signify how we’ve enhanced our approach to safety,” said Jeff Boyer, vice president, global vehicle safety. “We are bringing greater rigour and discipline to our analysis and decision making. If we identify an issue – large or small – that might affect the safety of our customers, we will act decisively.”
A further 124,008 Chevrolet Caprice, Chevrolet SS, Chevrolet Silverado LD and HD, Cadillac ATS, Cadillac CTS, Cadillac ELR, Buick Encore and GMC Sierra LD and HD vehicles are being recalled because certain vehicles may have an incomplete weld on the seat hook bracket assembly. The company said a faulty laser welder for the issue and said just 1% of welds are expected to require seat track replacement. GM is unaware of any crashes or injuries as a result of this issue.
Another 120,426 Buick Regal and Chevrolet Malibus are being recalled for issues with their front turn signals. Some 57,242 Chevrolet Impalas are being called in for issues with power steering. The company also announced issues with 1,919 Chevrolet Sparks and 22 Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban and GMC Yukon/Yukon Denali vehicles.
The recalls come as GM faces a Justice Department investigation into a decade-long delay in recalling cars with faulty ignition switches that the company has linked to 13 deaths.
Last week senators accused GM of a cover-up over the faulty switches when they questioned chief executive Mary Barra at a Senate hearing. GM has issued dozens of recalls and initiated a broad compensation programme for crash victims and their families since the ignition switch issue became public in February.
The recalls are part of a broad overhaul of the company’s safety procedures.
“We are going to fix our mistakes and we are going to be a better, stronger company,” Barra told senators last week.
