Former Spurs star wishes club success this season

Defoe

Jermain Defoe is hoping to see Spurs do well this season all the way from Toronto following last night's friendly against his former side.

The 31-year-old played 352 games for Tottenham during his two spells with the club and has not lost any love despite moving on to play for MLS club Toronto FC.

Defoe lined up against his former club in last night's 3-2 friendly win for Spurs as they continued their US Tour in preparation for the new campaign, and played 45 minutes before being taken off at halftime as the Canadian-based side have an important MLS game at the weekend.

Speaking after the game, he revealed how he was impressed with how sharp his former club looked, and wished The Lilywhites all the best ahead of the new season.

"I've still got many friends at the club, not just the players but the staff and everyone involved at the football club so I just want to wish them all the best for the season."

"There's a new manager and speaking to the players, they're enjoying training and they look really sharp tonight so hopefully they'll have a good year."

Erik Lamela scored twice in his first-half appearance last night and looked dangerous when in possession, and Defoe hopes to see the Argentine enjoy a better season than the one he endured last year.

"It's never easy when you come to a big club and people expect so much but it's not as easy as that."

"It takes time so hopefully this year he'll have a good year because he's got the potential, he's a good player and you see the two goals he got tonight - he made them look easy, and they're not easy."

Defoe has adapted to the new challenge of life in Major League Soccer with ease and has scored 11 goals in 14 appearances so far to help the side to their best ever points tally at the midway point of the season.

Toronto are on track to make the playoffs for the first time in their short history, and Defoe will play a major part in their success this season.
