Pochettino hails "unbelievable" Lamela after brace

Mauricio Pochettino heaped praise on Erik Lamela after last night's 3-2 victory against Toronto FC after the Argentine scored twice.

Lamela has already scored more goals under Mauricio Pochettino in two 45 minute spells than he managed during the whole of last season.

The Argentine struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League with Spurs and wasn't helped by injuries either, but has returned to pre-season looking very sharp, and Tottenham fans may be set to see the player they thought they had signed a year ago.

He looked lively from the offset in last night's victory and shone in his first-half appearance for the side, scoring twice to send the team in 2-0 up at the break.

Pochettino hailed his abilities after the game which saw the new manager win his first match as Spurs boss, but also revealed that he expects even more from the former AS Roma star.

"We expect a lot from him, he’s an unbelievable player, he needs to show us that he deserves to play, but at the moment we are happy with his performance.”

The 22-year-old thrived in a more central role against Toronto as a first-half front three of Aaron Lennon, Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen interchanged nicely and looking a constant threat.

Lamela also linked up well with Roberto Soldado, and the pair will hope to repay the Spurs faithful for the belief they have already shown the club's two most expensive transfers.

The Argentine attacker explained that he is raring to go after the game last night and is working hard for the new campaign.

I have to continue to work, as the season progresses I will continue to get better.

“I felt like I was able to play a good 45 minutes. Overall I think the team did really well and I'm happy with the performance today.

“I had an unfortunate injury last season that kept me out of play for quite some time. In the same way, it’s helped me emotionally and morally to get better and work harder towards this season.”

How important will Lamela be for Spurs this season?
