Napoli moving towards Javi Garcia

Napoli's defensive midfielder quest continues and Manchester City's Javi Garcia is being suggested as the primary objective.

Napoli have struggled to find the defensive midfielder they need for next season and the latest reports state that they will push for Manchester City man Javi Garcia.

The Partenopei appeared to be set to sign Lyon captain Maxime Gonalons on several occasions but time and again a deal fell through.

Hopes of landing Barcelona star Javier Mascherano were snuffed out and attempts to buy German international Christoph Kramer and Atletico Madrid's Mario Suarez have also stalled.

Italian newspaper Il Mattino states that Napoli are now hoping to pounce for Manchester City's Javi Garcia, whose place at the club is uncertain.

The 27-year-old may be sacrificed by the Premier League champions as they have too many non-homegrown players in their squad.

Alvaro Negredo, who was linked with Inter for a while, had looked likely to be the non-homegrown man to leave with Atletico Madrid waiting to pounce, but he has fractured his metatarsal and now the deal looks unlikely.

A deal may be made easier by the fact that Napoli boss Rafa Benitez shares his agent, Manuel Garcia Quilon, with Javi Garcia.

Garcia signed for Man City in 2012 from Portuguese giants Benfica and has made 48 appearances for the club in two years.

Napoli are allegedly considering Puel Josè M'Poku of Standard Liege as an alternative should Garcia prove too hard to sign.

The most likely stumbling block for Garcia to Napoli is the player's wage bill, which may be beyond the Italian club.
