Petr Cech warns Thibaut Courtois a battle is on for number one spot

Petr Cech

The experienced Chelsea stopper Petr Cech is aiming to retain his place as Mourinho's preferred goalkeeper this season.

Many expect the Czech Republic keeper to be a bit-part player in Jose Mourinho's new look Chelsea squad for the forthcoming season.

The return of Courtois after three seasons on loan at Spanish champions and Champions League runners-up, Athletico Madrid, has made people event think that Cech might even be surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.

But Cech has warned his boss and fellow team-mate that he is ready to battle it out for the number one jersey this season. He told Sky Sports:

"I don't want to be on the bench. This is why I am trying to do everything to be in the team. I don't want to talk about ifs and buts. Let’s see how I am going and what happens."

"You know I always give my best and obviously that is all I can do. I will do my best and do everything I can do to be as ready as possible for when the season starts."

"Obviously Jose Mourinho will make his choice and decide how his team is going to look for the first game, second game, third game, whatever game."

"It is up to us players to show we are ready to play and make him pick us. I am not any different. I am doing everything I can to make him pick me."

It is certainly fighting talk from the man who is celebrating 10-years at the club this July. Cech was part of the Chelsea revolution when signed from French side Rennes for £7 million in the summer of 2004.

In the 10 seasons since then Cech has arguably been their most consistent figure and performer, making a total of 470 appearances for The Blues.

Mourinho's decision is an unenviable one; on the one hand he has Courtois aged just 22. Arguably the world's most promising goalkeeper alongside David De Gea, and someone of his calibre cannot simply be used as a backup.

On the other he has Cech, still one of the world's best keepers, and very much in his prime at 32-year-old. His experience has been vital to Chelsea down the years.

Who would you select as Chelsea's first choice goalkeeper, Cech or Courtois?
