Twist in Arsenal keeper hunt? Real Madrid may flog Lopez not Casillas

Diego Lopez

Reports from Marca suggest it is Diego Lopez Real Madrid are trying to get rid of, not Arsenal target Iker Casillas.

After losing Lukasz Fabianski to Swansea City and deciding not to follow up their loan deal for Italian stopper Emiliano Viviano it is fair to say Arsenal are after another goalkeeping option this summer.

The list has been endless but it would now appear that the shortlist is down to two - Iker Casillas and David Ospina.

Ospina has shone in France for Nice and also had an excellent World Cup as the Colombian number one goalkeeper. With Nice set to sign Algerian shot-stopper Rais M'Bolhi in the coming days it would appear the French side are readying to move on from their Colombian star.

Casillas on the other hand is a star that has dwindled. The Real Madrid legend is second choice at the club behind Diego Lopez while his performances for Spain at the World Cup this summer left little to be admired.

With Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas reportedly set to join the growing amount of excellent World Cup performers heading to Madrid Casillas would become third-choice for Los Merengues. Rumours suggest Arsenal have already agreed personal terms with the player and that Casillas is trying to cancel his current deal with the club.

But not according to Marca, who report something entirely different in regards to Keylor Navas' arrival at the club. When the Costa Rican does sign from Levante, in a deal believed to be worth around £2.5 million, it will not be Casillas moved on - but Lopez instead.

They report that Real would not want to flog a club legend, instead they would be willing for he and Navas to scrap it out for the number one spot.

Lopez is reportedly wanted by AS Monaco, after injury scuppered their move for Victor Valdes, and Madrid feel it would be better in a publicity sense to allow Lopez an exit - and not their homegrown hero.

Leaving Ospina as the overwhelming favourite to challenge Wojciech Szczesny next season.
