League One transfer latest: Leyton Orient close in on former Arsenal striker

Jay Simpson

All the latest summer transfer news from League One...

Leyton Orient have been active in the transfer market since Italian Francesco Becchetti completed his takeover of the club, with Russell Slade moving to sign goalkeeper Gary Woods, defender Shane Lowry, midfielder Bradley Pritchard and winger Jobi McAnuff.

Now in a bid to boost his strike force, Slade is closing in on a swoop to sign former Arsenal striker Jay Simpson. The ex-Gunner was a key part of the youth and reserve teams in North London, but has struggled to settle since leaving to sign for Hull City in 2010. Having just left Thailand after an ill-fated spell with Buriram United, Simpson now looks set for a return to London with Orient.

Elsewhere, Notts County's recruitment drive could continue with ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Roy Carroll currently on trial at Meadow Lane. The former Northern Ireland international, 36, is currently a free agent having left Greek side Olympiacos this summer, and Magpies boss Shaun Derry could look to add Carroll if he impresses.

County need a stopper after first choice Bartosz Bialkowski left the club for Ipswich Town earlier this summer, and Carroll could join the likes of Blair Adams, Hayden Mullins, Liam Noble, Alan Smith, Nicky Wroe, Zeli Ismail, Garry Thompson and Jake Cassidy in signing for County.

Finally, Sheffield United could be breathing a huge sigh of relief after reports that Hull City were about to abandon their interest in Blades defender Harry Maguire. The young centre back, 21, has long been tipped to make the move to the KC Stadium, but after Steve Bruce's side had £1.5m and £2m bids rejected for the England Under-21 international, it seems the Tigers are unwilling to meet United's £3m price tag - a big boost to Nigel Clough's side ahead of the new season, which is just two weeks away.
