Manchester United take on AS Roma in their latest pre-season friendly later today.
Only six of Manchester United’s 26-man squad for this summer’s pre-season tour of the USA have yet to feature, which is quite a feat when you consider Louis van Gaal’s side has only played 90 minutes of football.
Following the 7-0 win over LA Galaxy that instantly released the hypothetical shackles many fans felt had hindered United under former manager David Moyes, it will be interesting to see which side van Gaal puts out for tonight’s game against Roma.
Of those six players (seven if you included the recently-added Nick Powell), two are goalkeepers, with Ben Amos and Sam Johnstone all too aware that they are unlikely to see much (if any) game-time once the season kicks off.
But the other players yet to play under van Gaal all have reasons to be hopeful. In Wilfried Zaha, Jesse Lingard and Will Keane, United have three supremely talented young footballers who will know just how important it is to make a good impression on the 62-year-old.
All three could become regulars for United in the years to come. But now is the time to start proving that, and it would be very surprising if all three were not given at least some minutes against Roma.
Then there is Javier Hernandez who, if you believe some reports, is already doomed to leave Old Trafford this summer.
And yet he is a goal-poacher unlike anything else United have, and van Gaal showed at the World Cup that he is not afraid to change things up front when required.
Is Hernandez a Plan B the new United boss can really do without?
Of all the players likely to be on show this evening, Zaha is arguably the one with the most to prove. And yet you sense he could be exactly the kind of player van Gaal will embrace.
The question is: After that 7-0 demolition job, what can United do in their second game to further impress their new boss?
Which United players would you like to see feature against Roma?
