Manchester United's Jesse Lingard has been speaking to the club's official website.

Manchester United player Jesse Lingard has been speaking about his hopes for next season.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder shone on United’s last pre-season tour, but this summer he has had to make do with a bit-part role to date.

In an interview with United’s official website, Lingard spoke about his recent loan spells and his ambitions moving forward.

Lingard spent last season on loan at Birmingham City and later Brighton & Hove Albion, and regarding his time away from Old Trafford he said, “I learnt so much from the loan spells last season.

“Playing in front of big crowds every week was great for my confidence and I was starting every game too against tough opposition.

“I think it will hopefully stand me in good stead for this season.”

Lingard has been tipped by many to make a breakthrough at United under new manager Louis van Gaal.

And the player appears to be enjoying learning from one of the best in the business.

“Training has been hard work but everyone has enjoyed it,” Lingard said. “We’ve been working on some new things which is good for us.

“We’re still adapting to how the manager wants us to play and his structure, but that’s something we’re enjoying.”

United have won both games of their pre-season tour to date, following up their 7-0 win over LA Galaxy with a 3-2 victory over AS Roma.

It is clear the van Gaal effect is already working, with United playing with far more attacking intent than they did under former boss David Moyes.

The problem for Lingard is that everyone will have upped their game following the 62-year-old’s arrival.

But if he can replicate his form from last summer and at times last season – most notably his four-goal debut for Birmingham – he might just force his way into van Gaal’s plans.

Do you think Lingard deserves a shot in United's first-team next season?
