Liverpool have signed Dejan Lovren from Southampton, but what are the numbers behind his career to date?

After much speculation, Dejan Lovren was officially unveiled as a Liverpool player on Sunday evening.

The £20million signing becomes the third former Southampton player to join the Reds this summer, following in the footsteps of Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana.

Given the weakness of Liverpool’s defence at times last season, the arrival of the Croatian international is no surprise and it will be interesting to see if Rodgers opts to pair him with Mamadou Sakho as is widely expected.

In the latest in our series on the numbers behind a player’s career to date, we take a closer look at the Reds newest arrival.

217 – The number of club games Lovren has played so far in his career. The defender played 29 times for Inter Zapresic, 55 times for Dinamo Zagreb, 102 times for Lyon and 31 times for Southampton.

9 – The number of club goals Lovren has scored so far. He netted three times for both Lyon and Dinamo Zagreb, twice for Southampton and once for Zapresic.

6 – The number of assists Lovren has so far in his club career. As well as keeping them out at one end and scoring them at the other, the 25-year-old can also set up his teammates on occasions.

9 – The number of times Liverpool’s new signing has been sent off in his club career. He has received three straight red cards and has been sent off on six occasions for committing two bookable offences.

44 – The number of yellow cards Lovren has collected for his previous clubs. He averages a booking every 4.9 matches.

78 – The number of times the centre-back has represented his country across all age-ranges. He has 27 senior caps since making his debut in 2009. He also played for their under-21 side on 20 occasions, as well as representing Croatia’s under-19s 13 times and their under-17 side 18 times.

Verdict – Lovren proved in his one and only season at Southampton that he is an excellent centre-back who is perfect for the Premier League. Rodgers has impressed with his summer transfers and the latest signing is no different. In fact it could be argued that Lovren’s signing is the best of the lot considering how much Liverpool needed defensive stability after last season’s wobbles arguably cost them the title.

Lovren and Sakho could form a formidable defensive partnership for years to come.
