La Liga heavyweights are speculatively linked to Tottenham Hotspur rock but the player has spoken out over the rumours.

Amid speculation that Barcelona were interested in acquiring tough defender Jan Vertonghen in order to strengthen their rearguard, Tottenham Hotspur have offered an extended deal to the centre back in order to tie the coveted player down for the foreseeable future.

Vertonghen attempted 32 tackles, 42 interceptions, 107 clearances and six outfield blocks from 23 Premier League starts last season and the Spurs management will be keen to retain the services of one of their top athletes, after a summer last year where they sold off their most valuable asset Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.

Real's rivals in the Spain division, Barca, are yet to make their interest official and so, currently, Vertonghen has claimed he is flattered but reaffirmed his loyalty to the Lilywhite North London cause.

Vertonghen told Vive le Velo, a Belgian talk show, according to the talkSPORT app. "Rumours will always be there but I just go back to Tottenham. Interest from a great club like Barcelona pleases me of course - this is confirmation that you're doing well.

"Where there's smoke, there's fire, they say, but for the moment there is certainly no fire."

To Belgian show Radio 1 he said: "I still had a four year contract but I see they have offered me a five year contract as a great sign of confidence. It goes without saying that I would like to stay at Tottenham."
