Chelsea transfer news: €36m Godin linked, Paul Pogba and Modric

Stamford Bridge Outside

All the latest Chelsea transfer news and rumours including reports of another player from Atletico Madrid being targeted.

The first piece of Chelsea-related transfer news of the day relates to burgeoning midfielder Paul Pogba, whose representative Mino Raiola explained earlier that his client has "two options".

Neither of those options concerns a transfer away from the player's current club Juventus, for whom he excelled throughout the Serie A season last year which thus earned him a regular spot in the France national squad at the World Cup and a summer's worth of constant speculation.

Perhaps in an effort to quell the speculaion, Raiola has spoken out in an apparent attempt to negotiate better terms for Pogba in Turin, where he currently receives a weekly salary of €50,000.

"I’ve not spoken yet with [sporting director Giuseppe] Marotta and I’ve no plans to meet him in the near future," said Raiola. "Anything is possible for Paul - he could remain at Juve without renewing his contract or it is also possible that he could decide to sign an extension before the start of the new Italian season."

Elsewhere, it could turn out that Francesc Fabregas was not Jose Mourinho's first choice for a creative midfielder this summer as he got in contact with a player he used to coach at Real Madrid, Luka Modric, to find out of the Czech star would be willing to swap the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu for Stamford Bridge.

"I called Modric only privately but he didn’t want (to join) Chelsea," Mourinho is quoted to have said by Sportske Novosti. "You know I really appreciate Luka Modric and his qualities. But he stays in Real Madrid."

While previous articles may have implied Mourinho had completed his transfer dealings for the summer, Le10Sport believe one more player could be added - and the Portuguese coach could return to Atletico Madrid a third time having already ratified deals for Diego Costa and Filipe Luis.

For €36 million, Chelsea could buy Diego Godin, a 28-year-old centre back responsible for 240 clearances, 94 interceptions and 62 tackles in La Liga competition last season. Oviacon, from Uruguay, back up Le10Sport's claims and have also reported on the alleged interest.
