How does Tottenham target Morgan Schneiderlin compare to Maurcio Pochettino's current options?
Tottenham are looking to take advantage of the current situation at Southampton by completing a deal for the club's combative midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin. According to the Daily Mail, the London outfit are in advanced talks over a move for the Frenchman and are hopeful of securing his signature by the end of the week.
Reports suggest that Tottenham's closest rivals Arsenal are also interested in the 24-year-old, although he is understood to favour a move to Spurs so he can be re-united with former Saints head coach Mauricio Pochettino. Following the Argentine coach's departure, the South Coast side have lost five key players, including last season's captain, Adam Lallana.
Should he make the switch to White Hart Lane, Schneiderlin will provide stiff competition for the club's current midfielders Mousa Dembele, Paulinho and Sandro. Below we look at the each players’ statistics from the previous Premier League season, courtesy of Opta, to assess just how much of an impact he could have upon arrival.

The Frenchman is excellent when it comes to recycling possession, this is perhaps his greatest asset. He is phenomenal in the tackle, winning a greater number of challenges per match than any Spurs midfielder, whilst his chance creation and pass success rate is only topped by Mousa Dembele, who often played in a more advanced role.
Schneiderlin's confidence in possession sees him ranked as one of the best ball-playing midfielders in the Premier League. He created a goal scoring opportunity far more regularly than Paulinho and Sandro and he averaged a far greater number of passes per match, than the entire Tottenham central midfield. Playing in a free-flowing Southampton side, the 24-year-old also registered considerably more touches in each appearance.
The Saints number four has also proven adept when it comes to fulfilling his defensive duties. He averaged over two interceptions per match; a total greater than Dembele, Paulinho and Sandro. The latter proved his closest challenger, averaging just over one interception in each appearance. This awareness would prove a valuable asset to Pochettino, who is clearly seeking the perfect balance between attack and defence in his new-look Spurs side.
Based on last season's statistics, Schneiderlin appears a significant upgrade when compared to Pochettino's current options at White Hart Lane. The Argentine manager showed clear admiration for the midfielder during his time with Southampton, and considering the current situation at St Mary's, it would be no surprise to see the duo re-united at some stage in the near future.
