Liverpool never asked me to stay on, says Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher Signing

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has revealed that the club never tried to keep him at Anfield in another role following his retirement at the end of the 2012-13 season.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has said that the club made no effort to retain his services in an off-field role following his retirement, claiming he was ‘embarrassed’ during his final season at Anfield.

A one-club man, Carragher made 737 appearances for Liverpool from 1996 to 2013, winning the Champions League, two FA Cups and two League Cups during his 17 seasons with the Reds, while also earning 38 England caps in the process.

Now a pundit for Sky Sports, the Merseyside-native says the option of remaining at the club in a coaching or advising role was never once offered to him, and believes the chances of ever fulfilling his long-held ambition of going into management are all but gone as a result.

"I was never offered a role by someone else or at Liverpool," he told The Anfield Wrap podcast.

"I told Brendan Rodgers 12 months before the end of that season that I was finishing. I knew I was finishing. I'd had enough of being a substitute.

"I said to Brendan 'I understand [Daniel] Agger and [Martin] Skrtel are your first choice, I want to help you as much as possible as a manager. I want to play, if I play well obviously I'd love to play, of course' and I got back into the team which was a brilliant ending for me.

"But he knew then that I was actually close to jacking it in halfway through the season just because I wasn't involved. I was embarrassed training every day.

"I don't think I'll ever move home, if I'm honest, so the chances of being a manager or a coach dwindle a bit there as I wouldn't be moving my family around this country, let alone Europe or whatever," he added.

"Who knows in the future but I'm enjoying what I'm doing."

Should Liverpool have offered Carragher a role at the club?
