Liverpool's Mignolet backs Origi to become 'top Premier League striker'

Simon Mignolet has backed international teammate Divock Origi to become a Premier League star, following the Belgian striker's £10m move from Lille.

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has given the thumbs up to new signing Divock Origi, after the Belgian forward completed his long-awaited £10 million move from Lille.

Scoring the winning-goal in his side’s 1-0 win over Russia at the World Cup, Origi’s performances in Brazil saw him become one of Liverpool’s top summer transfer targets, and international teammate Mignolet believes the club have secured the services of a genuine star in the making.

"He did really well for Belgium," he told Sky Sports News. "We didn't know that much about him but he came in and showed something to the outside world.

"He's definitely got that certain special ability. He's strong, quick, he's got skill, and he can score a goal as well, so he's got all the qualities needed to become a top striker in the Premier League."

As Liverpool look to bolster their squad following the £75 million departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona, Origi becomes the club’s sixth summer signing, following the arrivals of Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Emre Can, Lazar Markovic and Dejan Lovren, their recent spending now at just under £90 million.

Agreeing to a five-year contract at Anfield, the 19-year-old is coming off a breakout season with Lille, in which he scored five goals in 30 Ligue 1 appearances, the former Genk prospect's promising form earning him a surprise call-up to Marc Wilmots’ World Cup squad.

Set to be sent back to the French side for 2014-15 on a season-long loan, Origi’s move comes just two days after a £8.5 million deal for Queens Park Rangers striker Loic Remy collapsed due to a failed medical, with Rodgers still in the market for additional firepower upfront.

Having narrowly missed out on the title to Manchester City last season, Liverpool are pulling out all the stops to replace Suarez’s 31-goal impact, and a deeper squad will be required for a campaign in which the club will be fighting both for the Premier League and in Europe.
