Is Paul Lambert prioritising the wrong Chelsea winger?

Aston Villa

The Daily Mail has suggested Paul Lambert will prioritise a move for Victor Moses ahead of a deal for Christian Atsu for Aston Villa.

The Daily Mail has suggested Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert would prefer to wrap up a deal for Victor Moses from Chelsea before going after his Blues teammate Christian Atsu.

The Villa boss seems determined to improve the wide areas of his side, adding depth to his squad as he bids to avoid a scrap in the bottom half of the Premier League table this season.

The reason Lambert would reportedly prefer a deal for Moses, who struggled at Liverpool last season, is because he represents a player with greater Premier League experience.

“Aston Villa are rivalling neighbours West Bromwich Albion in a bid to take Chelsea wideman Victor Moses on loan. Manager Paul Lambert also has an interest in Chelsea’s Christian Atsu but Moses, 23, represents a ready-made Premier League player,” writes Simon Jones.

It would be an interesting move for Lambert to make considering the contrasting fortunes of the two players last season.

Moses spent the season on loan at Anfield, but 13 of his appearances in the Premier League came as a substitute as he was kept out of Brendan Rodgers’ team by the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge playing out of position.

He managed just one goal, with reports floating around during the season that Chelsea were unhappy with the lack of football he was getting.

In contrast, Atsu was a prominent part of the Vitesse Arnhem side he was on loan with. He made just a single substitute appearance, amassing 27 starts with five goals and six assists.

The numbers alone suggest that the Ghanaian is the man that Lambert should prioritise in terms of securing ahead of next season.

Of course the Premier League is a higher standard than the Eredivisie but it’s very difficult to argue that Moses had a better campaign than Atsu over the course of last season.

Should Lambert pull off terrific work in the transfer market and sign both players, it’s difficult to see Moses getting in ahead of Atsu even if Lambert does believe he’s a more experienced Premier League option.

Who should Lambert prioritise, Moses or Atsu?
