Report - Tottenham Hotspur could wrap up deal for Miguel Lopes today

White Hart Lane 6

Tottenham are reportedly closing on a deal for Sporting Lisbon defender Miguel Lopes.

The Daily Mail claims Tottenham Hotspur could be very close to a deal for Sporting Lisbon defender Miguel Lopes by the end of the day.

After completing a deal for Ben Davies from Swansea City, Mauricio Pochettino appears keen to sign full-back cover for each side of his defence and the four cap Portuguese international could be his man.

“Lopes can also play left-back but Tottenham want cover at right-back with Kyle Naughton attracting interest from Swansea City. His representatives are due to speak to Tottenham on Tuesday,” reports the Mail.

Lopes could turn out to be an extremely important signing for Spurs for several reasons.

Should Naughton complete that move to Swansea then Lopes will become the primary back up option for Kyle Walker down the right hand side.

However, his ability to play on the left also makes him an important back up option to Davies and he also prevents the need for Jan Vertonghen to play out of position, who is being tipped to sign a new contract at the club.

Vertonghen was extremely vocal over his displeasure at having to play at left-back last season and with Barca circling him like sharks, Spurs can’t give him any excuse to talk to the Spanish giants.

It’s a smart move all round by Pochettino because the deal will have the option of a permanent transfer when it expires.

That means that if Lopes takes to Premier League like a duck to water, Spurs’ boss has bypassed a potential bidding war for his permanent transfer when the loan deal expires.

The Mail also claims that Spurs have adhered to his high personal wage deal at Sporting, which means they are making an investment and will be likely to use him frequently throughout the new campaign.

Is Lopes a good potential signing for Tottenham?
