Napoli pour cold water on Manchester United midfielder links

Marouane Fellaini Belgium

Napoli have reportedly denied making a move for Marouane Fellaini.

Reports surfaced last night suggesting that Serie A side Napoli were looking to end Marouane Fellaini’s Manchester United nightmare by taking him to Italy.

The Red Devils were on the lookout for that key midfielder last summer when former boss David Moyes decided to shell out £27.5million for the Belgian international after missing out on targets Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas.

The big money signing from Everton came with big expectations, but unfortunately for both player and club, Fellaini had a disappointing campaign with the general consensus suggesting that he was an expensive mistake.

His future at United has since looked bleak and following the arrival of Ander Herrera, the Old Trafford outfit’s midfield now looks very top-heavy with at least one expected to leave.

The 26-year-old’s possible move to Naples, however, now appears a non-starter after fresh reports claim that Rafa Benitez’s side aren’t interested.

According to Sky Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, the Italian club are in the hunt for a new midfielder but Fellaini isn’t option from an economic standpoint.

“The sporting director Bigon is working hard, he flew to Germany yesterday, with a stopover in Brussels. Some reports suggested that he met Manchester United's Marouane Fellaini, but Naples strongly denied it, maybe because of the difficult conditions of the deal (the fee and the wages are very high),” The report states.

Last season, Fellaini made just 21 appearances for the club in all competitions and failed to find the back of the net.

Despite a poor domestic campaign, he was selected for Belgium’s 23-man World Cup squad and featured heavily during his country’s run to the quarter-final stage.

Does Marouane Fellaini deserve a shot under new boss Louis Van Gaal?
