€45m long-term United target reportedly for sale, but would he already be at Old Trafford under Moyes?

William Carvalho has reportedly been put up for sale by his current club, but would he already be a Manchester United player if David Moyes had remained?

The latest report from Portugal claims William Carvalho has been put up for sale by his current club Sporting Lisbon.

That is the claim of newspaper Record, which suggests the Primeira Liga side are keen to cash-in on the defensive midfielder while his reputation is high following an outstanding domestic campaign and a spell at the World Cup with Portugal.

In truth the story is slightly bizarre considering the player has a reported release-clause of €45million.

Indeed, when Manchester United were heavily linked with the player the suggestion was Sporting would not do business for anything less. And yet those rumours fell away almost as soon as David Moyes left Old Trafford.

So could that be it in a nutshell? Could Sporting be keen to sell their crown jewel for big money but his number one suitor has bowed out of the race, leaving the club to tout his services where before a move to United looked all but certain?

It is all speculation of course, but when a player is scouted upwards of 15 times in a season one can only assume the club doing the scouting are considering a move.

Such was the case with United under Moyes, his scouts seen in Portugal seemingly on a weekly basis.

There is a feeling that had the former Everton boss remained at Old Trafford this summer, William would already be there, possibly along with Toni Kroos.

But with new manager Louis van Gaal reportedly considering alternative options, the Portuguese international’s future remains unclear.

Would you still like to see William move to United or has that ship sailed?
